U23 AFCON: Ghana U23 coach Ibrahim Tanko outlines criteria for final player selection for tournament

Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko says performance will be key in selecting his final players for the U23 AFCON tournament in Morocco.

The much-anticipated AFCON tournament has been scheduled for June 24, 2023 in Morocco, where eight countries will compete for Olympic Games slot.

The Black Meteors will play in Group A alongside Morocco, Congo, and Guinea.

On Thursday, Ghana U23 held Egypt U23 team to a 1-1 draw at the Alexandria Stadium in a pre-AFCON friendly.

According to Tanko, he will give other players the chance to justify themselves in their next friendly before he announces his final squad for the tournament.

“We want to give everyone the chance, these are friendly matches that you can assess each of them. Definitely, in the next game, we are going to see another faces so we can have a fair idea on players to select for the tournament” he after Egypt game.

In the 9th minute, Issahaku displayed recovery skills at the edge of the box, weaving his way past three Egyptian defenders, only to be brought down inside the penalty area.

Afriyie Barnieh stepped up confidently and expertly converted the penalty, giving Ghana a well-deserved lead.

In the 34th minute, Danlad committed another lapse as his pass went straight to an opponent, who swiftly initiated a counterattack with a series of precise passes. The Ghanaian defense struggled to recover, and Egypt's well-executed team play resulted in the equalizing goal.

Ghana's last participation in the Olympic Games was in 2004, and they will be eager to make their mark on the global stage once again.
