Wayne Rooney Hits Back at Media as Storm Over Man United and England Captain's Behaviour Rumbles On

Published on: 24 November 2016

A defiant Wayne Rooney has hit back at sections of the media once more, as the storm surrounding his behaviour while on international duty shows no signs of abating.

The Manchester United captain was interviewed by BT Sport after the Red Devils' 4-0 Europa League triumph over Feyenoord put them within touching distance of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the continental tournament.

Rooney was asked whether his performance in Thursday's victory - a match that saw him become the new record goalscorer in Europe for United after plundering his 39th strike in continental football - was sweeter following the accusations that had been levelled at him in recent weeks but, clearly riled by further questions about the incident, the 31-year-old was feisty in his reply.

I think all that is created by people like yourself asking questions now, people in the media making a big deal over nothing" Rooney said.

I actually did not step foot into the wedding and I think it is a shame I am having to talk about it now after such a great victory.

Rooney was snapped looking worse for wear while on international duty with England earlier in November, with the Sun newspaper publishing images of the Three Lions skipper allegedly drunk at a wedding just hours after the 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Scotland.

Looking bleary eyed and apparently being unable to speak properly, Rooney was photographed alongside guests at the bash he had been invited to in the Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire, with sources claiming that he was like "the comedy drunk".

The ex-Everton starlet has come in for fierce criticism from pundits, critics and some fans for his actions and, after apologising for the inappropriate images of him, Rooney also released a statement to lambast the media for turning him into a scapegoat for no reason other than to sell more papers.

Rooney labelled the incursion into his private life as a "disgrace" and claimed that the press were attempting to "write his obituary" despite having many years left at the top level of football in a scathing attack on how the media operates in this country.

Yesssss Wazza!!! All time @ManUtd European top goalscorer = @WayneRooney ⚽

United legend Gary Neville, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and others involved in football has since leapt to Rooney's defence and, following his superb performance at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, United team mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic also weighed in with his own vindication of Rooney's character.

The striker told BBC Sport: "I think when you are famous like that, people are interested. They want to know everything.

"We should appreciate him for the player he is, what he did. I don't see many players from England who have had the same career as him. They should show more respect for him. Everybody wants to make a little thing a big thing."
