World Cup 2022: Former Ghana coach Mariano Barreto shares the difference between Black Stars and Portugal ahead of epic clash

Former Black Stars coach Mariano Barreto has revealed the difference between Ghana and Portugal national teams ahead of their 2022 World Cup encounter.

The Black Stars who are returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018 has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

On Thursday, Ghana will open their account the European giants before they face South Korea and Uruguay respectively.

Explaining the difference between the two teams ahead of the game, Barreto said it’s complicated for Portugal to face African teams whose idea is not to have a lot of possession but to attack and score when they win the ball.

"The Ghanaians have some big imbalances, because they are very skillful with the ball. If we don't contain some of the main units, we will have a lot of difficulty. I think it is much more complicated for Portugal to face African teams, whose idea is not to have a lot of possession, but attacking and scoring when they win the ball. That's what differentiates them”

“Ghana will play very objective football, with the aim of trying to play very close to the Portuguese goal. This is certainly what our national team will have to worry about", he told Lusa agency.

Ghana defeated Switzerland 2-0 in their final friendly ahead of the biggest soccer mundial in Qatar.

Goals from Mohammed Salisu and Antoine Semenyo ensured the Black Stars signal warning to Portugal ahead of the opener.

The Black Stars having missed out in the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018 will be hoping to improve their performance in Qatar after exiting the group phase during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year's tournament.
