World Cup 2022: I don't think it is a 'curse' - Asamoah Gyan on Andre Ayew penalty miss against Uruguay

Published on: 05 December 2022

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan believes Andre Ayew's penalty miss against Uruguay is not a curse as history repeated itself on Friday in the 2022 World Cup.

12 year-olds ago, Gyan missed a penalty against the two-time champions that could have sent Ghana to the semi-finals of the global showpiece.

Skipper Andre Ayew also missed a penalty in the 21st minute as his kick was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet following a foul on Mohammed Kudus.

Uruguay went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the game but it was not enough as teams went out of the tournament.

"It happened again yesterday. For me, I know what Andre [Dede Ayew] is going through right now," Gyan said.

"Maybe he might act very strong but he is human, It looks like history has repeated itself again in some way but, I don't think it is a curse, it is one of those things.

"Things happen in football and of course we just have to be strong and move forward.

'You might never know. As I said earlier, the Uruguayans were laughing 12 years ago [2010] And now they are going home crying

"The person [Luis Suarez] who was laughing at Ghana was crying yesterday.

"So two things, you cannot predict anything in the future. We didn't know it was going to happen again. But we have to stay strong mentally and move on

"Football, we are not playing football forever. Maybe our kids will come to redeem us one day, you might never know."

Ghana finished bottom of Group H with three points after losing to Portugal and Uruguay, having beaten South Korea in between.
