World Cup 2022: Inaki Williams unable to play against brother Nico Williams due to early exits for Ghana, Spain

The hopes of Inaki Williams to meet his little brother Nico Williams at the 2022 FIFA World Cup fell into water at the end of the group stage.

Born in Spain but of Ghanaian descent, the two Athletic Bilbao forwards could play for the two countries at the senior national team level.

For Inaki Williams, he accepted to switch from Spain to play for Ghana in September when he earned his debut call-up to play for the Black Stars in friendly matches against Brazil and Nicaragua.

His younger brother, Nico Williams decided to take a different path. Despite interest from Ghana, the youngster opted to represent the Spain national team.

Just like in 2010 when two Ghanaian players [KP Boateng and Jerome Boateng] played for different countries at the World Cup in South Africa, Nico Williams and Nico Williams repeated that cycle.

While the big brother went to Qatar with Ghana, the younger of the two was in Spain’s squad for the tournament.

Before the tournament, Spain coach Luis Enrique said he had no doubt the parents of the two attackers would be happy if Ghana played Spain in the finals and the Williams brothers played against each other.

Unfortunately, that would not come to pass.

Ghana exited the tournament at the group stage while Spain got knocked out at the Round 16 stage when they lost to Morocco on penalties.

The Williams brothers must now wait for the next edition of the World Cup to see what will happen.
