World Cup 2022: It was a pity and most cruel way to exit - Spain's Sergio Busquets on losing to Morocco

Spain captain Sergio Busquets is disappointed his side lost 3-0 in a penalty shootout against Morocco after a goalless draw at the 2022 World Cup, claiming it was cruel.

The two teams couldn't be separated after 120 minutes and Spain failed to convert any of their three penalties, with goalkeeper Bounou brilliantly saving two.

That left Hakimi to win it for the North Africans with his nerveless spot-kick and spark jubilant scenes in the stands at the Education City Stadium.

"It was a pity. It was decided on penalties in the most cruel way," said Busquets.

"It was tough, very hard for us. We tried to wear them down, give them the run-around, find spaces. We lacked that little luck for the final ball."

He added, "Now the most important thing is the national team and not me," said the Barcelona player.

"It's a tough night and we have to pick ourselves up and use this as experience for our game. There are some very young players who this will help a lot."

Morocco are the last African side following the exit of African champions Senegal, Ghana, Tunisia and Cameroon.

Coach Walid Regragui's side are also only remaining Arab team left in the tournament and will face Portugal in the quarterfinals in Qatar.
