World Cup 2022: It was important to deny Uruguay qualification to Round 16 – Ghana defender Daniel Amartey

Ghana international, Daniel Amartey has opened up on why defenders put their bodies on the line in the second half of the World Cup game against Uruguay.

The Black Stars were in action against the Uruguayans last Friday in a final Group H match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In a game that Ghana needed a draw to advance to the Round 16 stage, the team lost 2-0 after Andre Ayew wasted a penalty chance.

Speaking in his post-match interview, defender Daniel Amartey said the Black Stars were determined not to allow Uruguay to score a third goal because it would have sent the South Americans through.

"I just told my teammates that we need a goal now but they need a goal now so we have to defend for ourselves so that if we can't go, they don't go," the Leicester defender said.

He continued, "It was tough because you can see their centre back, everybody comes (forward).

"Uruguay needed one goal to go through and you can see we defend four against five or three against two but we managed to defend."

In the end, Ghana and Uruguay crashed out of the world cup with Portugal and South Korea advancing to the Round 16 stage.
