Klopp: Ox return a long way off

Published on: 18 July 2018

Head coach Jurgen Klopp says it will be an added bonus if injury-hit midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is able to play any part for Liverpool in the upcoming season.

The 24-year-old England international suffered major knee ligament damage in the first leg of the Reds' Champions League semi-final against Roma in late April and missed World Cup 2018 as a consequence.

If we do see him back this season it will be a bonus.

And, with the new campaign just around the corner, Klopp has confirmed that the road to a return remains a lengthy one for former Arsenal star Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The German told his club's official website: "We have known this from pretty much from the day after he got the injury and, after the successful surgery, we were sure of it.

"His surgery has been completely successful and his recovery has started superbly well.

"But the truth of the matter is that we are preparing for this season knowing he will not be with us on the pitch for competitive matches for the majority of it. If we do see him back this season it will be a bonus.

"It is so important - because of how valuable and important he is to what we are looking to do here in the coming seasons - that the focus is on doing this right and is not rushed."

Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Anfield on deadline day ahead of last season and scored five goals in 42 appearances for the Merseysiders before being forced on to the sidelines.

Liverpool are priced at 9/2 to win the Premier League title next season, while they are available at 14/1 to triumph in the Champions League.
