Pepe Confirms Desire to Sign New Contract and Retire at Real Madrid

Published on: 12 September 2016

Real Madrid centre half Pepe has revealed his desire to sign a new contract with the club over the next few months, and has admitted he would like to retire at Santiago Bernabeu.

The 33-year-old Portuguese star was integral to Zinedine Zidane's Champions League-winning team of last season, and also featured prominently as Portugal surprisingly won the European Championships in France last summer. However, the player is now in the final years of his career and has just one season left on his contract with Los Blancos.

But speaking to theCadena SER radio programme El Largueroon Monday night, he declared he would jump at the chance of staying if Real offered a new deal, and that his long-term goal is to stay until he retires.

He said:"I've got this season and I am happy. I'm a very positive guy, I try to do things right so that good things happen. If I can give my best, the club will see that and hopefully one day they will call me to sort this issue out."

On a potentialone-year extension, he added:"I'd accept that no problem. I'm happy at Madrid, my daughter studies here... for Madrid, with me, it's easy."

For Pepe, he believes he's just as good now as he's ever been, and he went on to state that he believes he's at his most mature now - having come in for disciplinary problems in the past.

He said:"I've got a lot of experience, and I'm not going to let my heart get in the way, I think more when I speak to referees. Since the first day I have fought to win my place and I've been in this game for 10 years. People value what I do and I am as enthusiastic in my job as I was on my first day."
