20/21 Ghana Premier League: Legon Cities FC draw against Berekum Chelsea in season opener

Published on: 14 November 2020

Legon Cities FC have been held to a 1-1 draw by Berekum Chelsea FC at the Accra Sports Stadium this evening on the opening weekend of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season.

In a first-half dominated by the home team, the Royals found themselves trailing after 22 minutes of play.

Berekum Chelsea earned a penalty as star man and captain Stephen Amankona made no mistake from the spot. The attacker smartly sent Legon Cities FC goalkeeper Fatau Dauda the wrong way to give the visitors the lead.

Later after the hour mark, the tables turned with Legon Cities FC being awarded a penalty kick after new signing Baba Mahama had been brought down by a Berekum Chelsea defender.

Stepping up to the task, winger Jonah Attuquaye scored against his formal club to restore parity for the home team.

Although there will be other chances for either side before the break, neither could not find the back of the net.

After recess, Legon Cities FC enjoyed the better of possession and threatened on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, the side could not add the finishing touch.

In the end, Berekum Chelsea held Legon Cities FC to a 1-1 draw after the away team had wasted a glorious free-kick opportunity.

The 2020/2021 Ghana Premier league season continues tomorrow with 6 matches across different match centres. Later on Monday, Inter Allies will lock horns with Dreams FC to wrap up Matchday 1 of the new season.
