2021 AFCON: Tunisia midfielder Yassine Chikhaoui tears ACL; set to miss tournament

Published on: 28 December 2021

Tunisia midfielder, Yassine Chikhaoui has tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is set to miss the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Cameroon next year.

Chikhaoui was part of the Tunisia team that participated and reached the final of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, where they eventually lost to Algeria.

However, he didn’t play the part that he would’ve hoped for in his team’s quest to lift the trophy.

Other than an 11-minute appearance in their 5-0 win over Mauritania in the opener, the 35-year-old was benched for the entirety of tournament due to an injury.

The Carthage Eagles now revealed that the Etoile du Sahel captain teared his ACL and will be out for an undetermined period of time, meaning he will officially miss the 2021 AFCON.

The AFCON will take place in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February. The Carthage Eagles were drawn in Group F and will begin their AFCON journey on 12 January against Mali, before facing their remaining group opponents Mauritania and Gambia respectively.
