2022 FIFA World Cup: Fixture dates for Ghana’s group matches to remain unchanged despite new proposal

Published on: 11 August 2022

Although there is a proposal being considered by FIFA for a new start date for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, dates for Ghana’s fixtures in the group stages will not be affected.

Per the existing schedule agreed upon by FIFA, the 2022 FIFA World Cup scheduled to be staged in Qatar is to start on November 21.

From that schedule, host Qatar will not play the first match of the tournament, a tradition that has existed since the 2006 edition of the tournament.

However, after many considerations, Qatar wants to continue with that tradition. As a result, the football association in the country has reached an agreement with the federation of Group A opponent Ecuador to change the date and time of the opening game.

Through that engagement, a proposal has been presented to FIFA. When accepted, Qatar will clash with Ecuador on November 20, a day before the originally agreed start date of this year’s mundial.

Ghana’s group matches will remain as scheduled notwithstanding the decision of FIFA.

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Black Stars are in Group H and will face their counterpart from Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.
