2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers: Mali shares spoils with Central African Republic after 1-1 draw

Published on: 20 November 2023

Mali are now top of Group I in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after a 1-1 draw with Central African Republic on Monday evening.

Les Aigles opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a win over Chad last week.

Today, Mali hosted the Central African Republic hoping to make it two wins out of two.

Unfortunately, for the side, the opponent would not settle for another defeat in the qualifiers.

In the game today, both national teams played well in the first half but neither side could get on the scoresheet.

In the second half, Kamory Doumbia equalised in the 76th minute to give Mali the lead. Just three minutes later, the Central African Republic scored through Geoffrey Kondogbia to force the game to end in a 1-1 draw.

The result has sent Mali to the top of the Group I standings while the Central African Republic stays in 5th.

Meanwhile, Comoros will host Ghana in the last of the Round 2 games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
