Giovanni Simeone's second-half header set Gennaro Gattuso's Milan on a course to lose their third straight Serie A match but Turkey international Calhanoglu acted quickly to spare their blushes.
Roma had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo that leaves them nine points behind leaders Napoli.
Roma had gone ahead through Lorenzo Pellegrini but Simone Missiroli's 78th minute equaliser gave Sassuolo a share of the spoils.
