AC Milan Legend Andriy Shevchenko Refuses to Rule Out Taking Over as Manager One Day

Published on: 19 February 2017

Ex-AC Milan striker, Andriy Shevchenko, has refused to rule out the possibility of one day managing his former side and also had a few words to say about current manager, Vincenzo Montella.

The forward picked up a hoard of major honours during his seven years with the side including the Italian league title, Coppa Italia and Champions League.

"Right now I'm only focused on Ukraine," said Shevchenko as he reaches 6 months in charge of the national side. "In the future we will see. Certainly Milan will always remain in my heart."

Despite making his name at the Italian side, Shevchenko is also well known for his disappointing spell at Chelsea after a £30m move. The Ukrainian, who missed the deciding penalty in the 2005 Champions League final loss to Liverpool, returned to Milan on loan but missed out on

Il Rossoneri's 2007 Champions League final revenge over Liverpool.

Asked for his opinion on the current AC Milan manager, Shevchenko said: "Vincenzo was a great striker and now is a great coach as well as a great man.

"For me he is doing something exceptional because he has built a united group and they have a good game.

"With him AC Milan is back at high levels, although still something is missing to win."

After making an impressive start to the season, Milan were one of the favourites for the title alongside current leaders, Juventus. However, with just two wins in 2017, Montella's side are now 7th and look unlikely to even qualify for the Champions League this year.

Also in poor form is their main striker, Carlos Bacca, who is struggling for goals at the moment and has been replaced through the middle by former Barcelona and Everton winger, Gerard Deulofeu, who scored an impressive goal in their 2-1 win over Fiorentina.

Now four points ahead of Fiorentina with the win, Milan will look to start closing the gap on 6th-placed Lazio as they attempt to climb up the league table. However, with Napoli ten points ahead in the final Champions League qualification spot, Montella may have to settle for Europa League football next campaign.
