Ghanaian giants Accra Hearts of Oak are celebrating their 106th birthday today.

Accra Hearts of Oak is the second most successful club in Ghana and one of the big clubs on the continent. The Phobians, as they are affectionately called are one time champions of the CAF Champions League as well as winners of the Super Cup ad Confederations Cup.

The 20 times Ghanaian Champions was formed on November 11th, 1911.

Hearts of Oak won their first major match in 1922 when Sir Gordon Guggisberg, governor of the Gold Coast, founded the Accra Football League. Hearts won 6 out of 12 seasons in this league. In 1956, Hearts joined the Ghanaian football league and have flourished since.

Meanwhile, on May 9th the club suffered in one of the deadliest disasters in African football when fans of the club and rivals Asante Kotoko died after violence erupted in a heated contest.

Hearts of Oak ended the Ghana Premier League in third position this year and were in the final of the MTN FA Cup.
