AFCON 2017: We Showed Strong Mentality - Atsu

Published on: 30 January 2017

Ghana winger Christian Atsu says the Black Stars showed they had character to churn out results from difficult situations.

Ghana beat DR Congo 2-1 to progress to the Semis of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. Jordan Ayew scored a beautiful opener but his goal was cancelled out minutes later after Congolese midfielder Paul Jose M’poku scored a belter.

Christian Atsu, who has been a menace for most defenders in the tournament, was at it again when he was fouled to hand Ghana a penalty which was expertly converted by Andre Ayew.

‘‘It was a very tough game but we showed that we are mentally strong. We fought till the end and we had the results,” he said after the game to the BBC.

“In the first half we didn’t play good but we were organized and in the second he wanted to win the game, we gained more strength and when we had the ball we tried to push them and then we scored. Now, we are happy.”

Ghana will play Cameroon in Franceville on Thursday in the second semifinal at the Africa Cup of Nations.
