Anthony Martial Closing in on Milestone That Will Leave Man Utd Reaching Further Into Their Pockets

Published on: 30 November 2016

Anthony Martial cost Manchester United around £36m in the summer of 2015. That alone made the French forward the most expensive teenager in the world, but United will soon have to cough up a little more as he nears a personalOld Trafford milestone.

Overall, including all the various performance related bonuses add-ons, the deal totalled just shy of £60m. United are obliged to pay Monaco extra if and when Martial achieves certain things - there was a clause if he is nominated for theBallon d'Or, for example.

And after two goals against West Ham in the EFL Cup this week took his United tally to 21, Martial is now just four more strikes away from triggering a clause that will see Monaco pocket an instant€10m.

In a similar clauseUnited actually already paid €10m after he played his 25th game.

Anthony Martial on 21 goals for Man Utd now; four more and a payment of €10,000,000 will be due to Monaco (!)

The France international led the club in goals in his debut season, scoring 17 times in all competitions. It was a career high tally and defied all expectations for a player so young.

After a slow start to the new season because of Euro 2016 and an unfortunate injury, he looked bright on Wednesday night and it may not be too long before he does ring up25 goals.

Given the level of his talent, even if United do end up paying most or all of the extra bonus payments up to take it up to the full£58m, it will probably be worth if for what they are getting in return from Martial on the pitch.
