Antoine Griezmann Beats Messi and CR7 to La Liga Best Player Trophy as Atletico Collect 4 Awards

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has been named as the La Liga's best player for the 2015-16 seasonat the league's annual awards night.


It was a successful night for Atletico, with Griezmann's team-mates Jan Oblak and Diego Godin winning awards in the best goalkeeper and defender categories. Their coach Diego Simeone also won the best coach award.


The best player award had been dominated by Barcelona star Lionel Messi, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldoalso picking up the award in the past, but Griezmann has broken the streak that started back in 2008-09, when the awards were established.

The France international was also awarded the special Five Star award, which is chosen by fans, and collected byAtletico director of football Jose Luis Perez Caminero on Griezmann's behalf.


"I'm lucky because since I've arrived I've encountered a group of men who are more than just football players," Atletico coachDiegoSimeone told the audience, asquoted by Marca.

While Griezmann was named as the best player, he missed out on selection for the team of the year, which was made up completely of playersfrom Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Ronaldo, Messi and Luis Suarez were selected as the best forwards for the 2015-16 season.


Real Madrid's Luka Modric was named as the midfielder in the league, and was named in the team of the year alongside Barcelona's Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. Diego Godin and Gerard Pique were selected as the two centre-backs, with Marcelo and Serigo Ramos also included with Jan Oblak in goal.


Atletico are currently fifth in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real Madrid.
