Arsene Wenger Confirms Danny Welbeck Could Return to Face Liverpool

Published on: 03 March 2017

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Danny Welbeck is in contention to face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The 26-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance this term and Wenger has insisted that he'll be under consideration.

I'd like to see Danny Welbeck in for Arsenal. Energy, work rate, power and pace. Such a shame he's missed so much of his Arsenal career.

Speaking to Arsenal'sofficial website, the 67-year-old said: "He's in contention. Yes [we've been careful] because he had ups and downs with his response to his knee problem. I followed the advice of our medical staff."

The former Manchester United graduate has endured a torrid time with injuries since he signed for the Gunners in 2014. He missed large parts of the previous two Premier League campaigns and Arsenal fans will be hoping to see the England attacker find a regular run of games.

Welbeck has made an impression in this year's FA Cup, though, scoring twice against Southampton at St Mary's in January. However, the former Sunderland loanee will want to channel all of his focus an energy towards Saturday's crunch encounter on Merseyside as both sides jostle for a Champions League place.

Jurgen Klopp's side slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester City on Monday evening after they had returned to winning ways with victory over Tottenham two weeks previous. Arsenal were without a fixture last weekend due to the EFL Cup Final, but they were comfortable 2-0 winners over Sutton United in the FA Cup 12 days ago.
