Burnley 1-2 Manchester City: Sergio Aguero Double Puts City Top of the Premier League

Published on: 25 November 2016

Manchester City ascended to the top spot of the Premier League by defeating Burnley, thanks to star striker Sergio Aguero's double.

City hoped to climb to the top in the early kick-off with a win, but Burnley's form at Turf Moor would have to be breached. The Clarets had only lost to Swansea and Arsenal in the league this season.

A nostalgic start for Paul Robinson gave Burnley a needed feel-good factor after their 4-0 whipping at West Brom on Monday.

An early penalty appeal came for Jeff Hendrick, who was clattered by Nicolas Otamendi. The referee gave nothing, andSergio Aguero then forced Robinson's first save on return.

Replays showed that Hendrick might have been offside, but the flag did not go up and the midfielder had surely been fouled.

Burnley took a deserved lead through Dean Marney, and it was a cracker. Robinson's long ball was headed back only as far as Marney, who beautifully hammered it past Claudio Bravo into the corner. City had started sloppily.

Yaya Toure helped City improve afterwards, and blasted a shot off the outside of the post. Soon enough, the breakthrough came from a corner. The ball bounced around in the penalty area and Aguero stabbed the ball home to equalise.

The pressure continued, and Robinson produced an excellent save to deny a curling Aguero effort. The visitors were completely changed from the opening twenty-five minutes.

The bad news continued before half time for Burnley, as Marney and Johann Gudmundsson departed with injuries. The half time whistle could not have come quickly enough for Sean Dyche's men.

Toure hooked an effort over the bar early in the second half, as City returned to the front foot. Ultimately, Aguero's second put the visitors in front from a defensive horror show. Toure might have been brought down for a penalty, but the ball bobbled to Stephen Ward.

Unfortunately, he and Ben Mee both challenged for the same ball and tackled each other, allowing Fernandinho to the by-line. His pass gave Aguero a simple tap-in.

Nolito and Aguero both got themselves stupid yellow cards, which will have infuriated Pep Guardiola. Sam Vokes promptly had a header cleared off the line by Aleksandr Kolarov.

Burnley continued to prove their acumen by challenging for an equaliser until the end, even if Bravo remained comfortable other than a late Keane header which struck Mee's back and an acrobatic Vokes effort into his gloves.

The Clarets had proven themselves as a bookmakers' choice to avoid relegation, but Aguero's double had put City right back into the hot seat for the title race by putting them top with everybody else still to play.
