Burnley 3-2 Crystal Palace: Burnley Score Late on to Hold Off a Spirited Palace Fight Back

Published on: 04 November 2016

Burnley got off to a flying start to go two goals up in the first 15 minutes and despite a spirited Crystal Palace fight back, Burnley struck late to earn a 3-2 win.

Palace would have been hoping to bounce back after a convincing defeat to Liverpool, but they came up against a tough Burnley sidewho played brilliantly in their last fixture to hold Manchester United to a 0-0 draw.

Although Burnley couldn't score at Old Trafford, they wasted no time in finding the opener at Turf Moor with a goal inside two minutes.

The goal came from Palace's own corner as Hendrick broke upfield at pace, before Gudmundsson chipped a ball into an unmarked Matthew Lowton at the far post. After his low effort was parried away by SteveMandanda, SamVokes was there to tap into an empty net.

Palace tried to instantly get back into the game after they won a corner from the right. But when Heaton missed the cross swung in at the far post, Ward couldn't make contact to score a certain goal.

JasonPuncheon got in on the act soon after as Palace capitalised on a mistake by Michael Keane but after working the ball to Puncheon, he saw his low effort collected by Heaton at the second attempt.

Soon after Burnley were two goals to the good, as a counter attack from a great WilfriedZaha chance left them exposed. The ball had fell to the winger eight-yards out but Heaton rushed off his line to make a block.

Burnley then launched a counter which put Gudmundsson through down the left and hebeat Mandanda with a low effort that the France international could only get a hand to.

Pardew must have been wondering how his team were two goals down but they didn't seem to be resting on their laurels. Palace had recycled the ball from a corner and it fell nicely to Andros Townsend on the edge of the box, only for the winger to slice agonisingly wide of the target.

ChristianBenteke got his first real chance of the game just before half time as a good move by Palace found McArthur in the box who set up Benteke but the Belgian fired straight into Heaton from 10-yards out.

Burnley could easily have made it three after the whistle for the second half. Vokes had two good opportunities in which the first thatcamefrom the edge of the box just missed the right-hand post and then Mandanda got down at his near post to save his second effort.

Vokes missed another half-chance shortly after and eventually his poor finishing was punished as Palace pulled one back on the hour mark.

It was inspired by manager Alan Pardew as he subbed on Connor Wickham and he scored with his first touch. Zaha beat his man down the right and put in a low cross for Wickham to meet it in the box and fire home.

It was nothing short of deserved and palace could have scored a replica shortly afterwards as Zaha got more joy down the right flank only for Cabaye's shot from his low cross to be blocked by Ben Mee.

It may have been bonfire night but Palace were providing all the fireworks as they had Burnley pegged back into their box. Zaha had been excellent throughout and set up Benteke after a wonderful run, but Mee was there again to make a block.

Palace finally made the breakthrough after winning a penalty with 10 minutes left. Palace launched a counter after a rare Burnley corner and when Townsend sent in a cross, Lowton lent in with his hand and the ref pointed straight to the spot for Benteke to coolly stroke home.

There were some great chances towards the end but it looked like it was heading for a draw only for Burnley to send Turf Moor wild with a late goal in the 94th minute.

Burnley set off a typical counterattack from a Palace free kick and after Ashley Barnes gave a disappointing pass out wide, he received it back to blast home to ensure the Clarets let off the final firework in a display that Guy Fawkes himself would have been proud of.
