CAF set to postpone AFCON to 2022

Published on: 29 May 2020

The Confederation of African football (CAF) are leaning towards the postponement of the AFCON from 2021 to 2022, footballghana.com sources have gathered.

The reason for this impending decision is that CAF are finding it increasingly difficult to schedule the remaining qualifying matches in 2020 due to the negative impact of the coronavirus.

The option of playing the tournament in June is active but the climate in Cameroon at the time makes it impossible to play the competition within that period.

Although the willingness to postpone to 2022 is there, footballghana.com understands that CAF still has some reservations about the move due to some reasons.

The first reason is the European leagues have a tight schedule in the year in which the World Cup takes place, and despite the establishment of the World Cup 2022 in November, nothing will change, so that it will be a difficult date for the 2022-2023 season patrols, which usually start in August.

Therefore, the establishment of another continental or international championship in the same year is not favored by the major European leagues, as it refuses the departure of its players for international participation in more than one occasion throughout the year.

The second reason is that CAF do not want to play tournaments around the time where the Euros or World cups are played anymore and the final reason is that they will expect opposition from a number of African stars playing in Europe.
