David Silva Could Face Axe as Pep Guardiola Looks to Reshape Stuttering Manchester City

Published on: 22 October 2016

Manchester City attacking midfielder David Silva could be axed in favour of new signings, with Pep Guardiola reportedly warning his squad that no one is guaranteed a starting place.

Guardiola's pressing style worked wonders during his time with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and the likes of Leroy Sane and Nolito brought in to press from the front in the same waywhile John Stones and Claudio Bravo were signed to help City play out from the back, with mixed success so far this season.

After spending big in the summer, Guardiola is eager to shift some of the deadwood he encountered after taking over from Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.According to the Mirror, players like Yaya Toure, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaletawill not be offered new contracts having failed to win over Guardiola, while Joe Hart and Samir Nasri, who both left the club on loan this season, also have no futures at the Etihad.

Eliaquim Mangala, Willy Caballero, Wilfried Bony and Jesus Navas are also set to be let go in the summer, while star performers like Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero and David Silva are reportedly fighting for their City futures.

Aguero has been dropped recently, with Guardiola citing tactical changes, while Kompany has endured a rotten few season with injuries, making just 14 Premier League appearances last season and featuring in just two matches in all competitions this year.

AlthoughGuardiola has since declared Kompany and Aguero have futures at City, the two will need to submit themselves to the Catalan's ideals in order to gain starting places. They were bothimportant members of City's title wins in 2011-12 and 2013-14, but couldbe the only players from those title wins next season should Guardiola ring the changes during the summer transfer window.
