EXCLUSIVE: Edwards reveals \'I rejected record Italian offers for 2 Man Utd legends\'

Former Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has revealed the two biggest offers he rejected during his 22-year stint at the club.

Back in 1984, Red Devils legend Bryan Robson was the subject of interest from Italian giants Juventus. United were on a run towards their maiden Cup Winners' Cup triumph, but lost to the Old Lady in the semi-finals. It was during this time that Robson was given permission to talk with the Serie A club.

But Edwards says he resisted selling the Englishman after receiving an offer of £3m.

Speaking exclusively with Tribal Football, Edwards said: "We turned down [an offer for Bryan] Robson when we was at his absolute peak.

"I think it was Juventus for him and offered £3m which was a big sum at the time but we didn't want Robson to go."

Robson eventually become the club's longest serving captain - a record which stands today - and helped break United's 26-year title drought in 1992/93.

And he wasn't the only United to be courted by Italian clubs, with Edwards also stating he once rejected an offer for club legend Paul Scholes.

"At one time, an Italian club came in for [Paul] Scholes," added Edwards.

"It might have been Milan, but it was definitely one of the top Italian clubs at the time."

Scholes would go on to make 718 appearances for the club and win 11 Premier League titles.

Edwards famously hired Sir Alex Ferguson in 1986 and stuck by the Scotsman for three barren seasons. His patience paid off as he walked away with eight Premier League titles, six FA Cups and the Champions League before leaving the club in 2002.
