Former Arsenal Midfielder Emmanuel Petit Believes 'Simeone Must Replace Wenger'

Published on: 10 February 2017

Former Arsenal midfielder, Emmanuel Petit, has singled out Diego Simeone as the man that he wants to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal boss when the Frenchman leaves.

After falling 12 points behind Chelsea with the 3-1 loss to them last weekend, Wenger hascome under increased criticism from Arsenal fans - who have taken to Twitter with #WengerOut tweets calling for the end of the his reign.

Wenger, face it! 95% of the fan base has turned of you! Get out of the club. Thanks for the memories but it's time to go! #WengerOut pic.twitter.com/4Zrv4WBZJP

Rather that simply adding to the 'should Wenger stay or leave?' debate, Petit has made a suggestion as to who he believes should replace the 67-year-old when he does leave, telling Soccer AM:"If Arsene [Wenger] leaves I'd like to see DiegoSimeone from Atletico Madrid [replace him].

He has got huge experience. What he has done for the last five years at Atletico is amazing, given the two top guns in Spain in Real Madrid and Barcelona."

They are still competing every season with them in La Liga and the Champions League, that is a huge achievement," Petit continued.

On top of that he has the discipline and vision to how he wants his players to play on the pitch, with high intensity and respect.

That could be something very good for Arsenal, but only if Arsene leaves.

The Frenchman then went onto deliver his scalding assessment of the current group of Arsenal players, adding:"Arsenal have spent a lot of money in the transfer market in the last two years. This is where the focus should be.

"There is a lot of speculation surrounding Arsene. The question should be asked about the players in the squad. I think 30 percent should be leaving the club."

As contract talks with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil continue to drag on, speculation surrounding the duo has begun and as a result of current form, Arsenal fans have begun to turn on Ozil - who could be part of that '30%' that Petit is referring to.
