Gattuso: AC Milan now know games last 90 minutes

After bagging a 4-1 win over Sassuolo, AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuse was happy with his side’s character and seems to have fixed problems which had plagued the Rossoneri in previous matches.

Two Suso goals, his first since February helped and pair from Franck Kessie and Samu Castillejo quelled talk of a crisis at the San Siro.

“We had a lot of shots from outside the area against Empoli,” Gattuso told the press. “But people only look at the result.

“Today we played well, creating a lot. We had a lot of shots on goal again tonight. We were missing a one from Calhanoglu who was knocking on the door.

“Against Empoli we weren’t decisive enough, and that was the case this evening. But we are happy as it was a good match. We were good when things went wrong and out quality came through.”

Samu Castillejo scored Milan’s third of the night on the hour mark which effectively put the game to bed, after starting up front in a ‘strikerless’ system.

“He [Castillejo] gave us room to breathe,” Gattuso went on. “He attacked very well too. He gave us a point of reference and even outwith the goal he helped a lot.

“I tried to change the course of the game, and I have to thank him for the excellent work he did.

“I didn’t want to risk Cutrone, and I needed freshness as well as security. I’m happy with how he played.”

Before Sunday’s match Milan had drawn each of their last three matches, going ahead in their last two against Atalanta and Empoli, before being pegged back.

“At the moment we know that when we play the football we like to play, we are comfortable,” Gattuso continued.

“A lot of the time we don’t have that feeling of covering well and managing our confidence.

“We leave too many gaps, and we have started working on it, so we are happy with that.

“Now, we know that games last 90 minutes as we have already lost many point already because of late goals.”
