Former Ghana Football Association Vice President, George Afriyie has urged government to financially support Ghanaian clubs participating in at the CAF Inter-club competitions this season.

Both Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold who are representing the country managed to advance to the next stage of the competition over the weekend.

AshantiGold were the first to progress following a 4-1 aggregate scoreline on Saturday whiles Asante Kotoko progressed on Sunday ahead of Kano Pillars of Nigeria after a 4-3 aggregate.

Interacting with the media after Kotoko’s win over Kano Pillars, George Afriyie soughted for government’s intervention to financially assist Ghanaian clubs at African stages.

“We should all plead with the government to come and assist the clubs representing us in Africa this season. At least if they are able to take the cost of travel of the various teams or provide them with air tickets when the travel it will be of immense help to these clubs”

The GFA Presidential hopeful believes solving such a need will help clubs focus more on their games and make much progress at the continental tournament.

The  Sports Ministry has meanwhile promised a $200,000 and $150,000 for the two clubs if they make it to the Group Stage of the Champions League and the Confederation Cup respectively.

Asante Kotoko will welcome Etoile Sportive du Sahel in the first round of the Champions League in Kumasi whiles AshantiGold play against RSB Berkane in the next round.
