Ghana’s John Antwi to play under new coach after Martin Jol parted ways with Al-Ahly

Ghanaian striker John Antwi is set to play under a new coach at Egyptian side Al Ahly after Dutch coach Martin Jol departed his job after just six months in the post following their elimination from the African Champions League.

The former Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur manager helped Ahly to retain the Egyptian championship in June but their failure to get past the group phase of the Champions League saw him offer his resignation, accepted by the club’s board.

Ahly’s hopes ended last Friday after a 2-2 home draw with surprise package Zesco United of Zambia left them unable to secure a top two finish in Group A and advancement to next month’s semifinals.

The setback came five days after arch rivals Zamalek beat them in the Egyptian Cup final. This development will come as a relief to Antwi who had a tensed relationship with coach Jol and was recently served with a fine of $11,000 for leaving training without seeking permission from team officials before their CAF Chanpions league Match against ZESCO United.

The Former Sekondi Hasaacas Foward joined Al Ahly in 2015 and has scored 6 goals in 17 appearances.
