Great Goal Mate! Wayne Rooney Tweets Memphis Depay After Dutchman's Wonder Goal

Published on: 12 March 2017

The Memphis Depay renaissance continued in Lyon on Sunday, as he bagged a brace in his new club's 4-0 demolition of Toulouse. Depay's second goal was the one that made the headlines however, as he audaciously scored from the halfway line, catching young Toulouse keeper Alban Lafont off his line and putting an exclamation point on what already an excellent day for Memphis and his teammates.

The goal sent Twitter into a frenzy, with many surprised at the former Manchester United winger's strong showings since his January departure from Old Trafford, with the Dutchman scoring five goals and assisting a further three in just eight appearances for the Ligue 1 giants.

That Memphis Depay goal was out of this world. Thank God 4 that buy back clause.

Many United fans are already speculating that the buy back clause in his Lyon contract will be called into use if Depay continues to catch the eye, although many fans will not have forgotten the underwhelming initial spell that he spent at the club.

Sunday's goal still garnered a lot of praise however, not least from Memphis' former captain at United Wayne Rooney. Rooney himself is no stranger to the spectacular, having scored a similarly long range goal against West Ham a few seasons back, and the United talisman took to Twitter to congratulate Depay on his goal, with Depay responding respectfully to the Red Devils veteran.

@WayneRooney Thank you legend
