The Villa player was also linked with a move to Marseille, but it would appear that Everton have won the race to sign the player, in a deal reported to be around £7m by the Mirror.

Gueye started his career at Lillie, racking up almost 200 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, before he moved to England for £9m.

He went on to play 37 times for Aston Villa last season during a disappointing campaign that saw them relegated to the Championship in last place.

However, the 26-year-old has been handed an instant return to the Premier League after Ronald Koeman came calling and looks set to become the Dutchman's second signing as Everton boss, following the capture of Fulham keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Everton have not officially confirmed the signing at the moment of writing.
