Injury Curse Threatens to Derail Madrid's Quest for Silverware Ahead of Copa del Rey Return Clash

There is panic at Real Madrid ahead of their crunchCopa del Reytie against Celta Vigo, with only 16 first-team players available for selection because of an injury curse.

Los Blancos are 2-1 down after the first leg, and will be going into the second clash with a threadbare squad after the strugglingRaphael Varane pulled out.

The Mail reports that Zidane has 19 first-teamers on his hands but three of those are goalkeepers, which would mean the Frenchman wouldn't even be able to properly fill his substitutes' bench.

The biggest star in the treatment room currently is Gareth Bale, who is understood to be ready to begin light training after sustaining an ankle injury back in November. Pepe, Dani Carvajal and James Rodriguez are all continuing their recovery programmes from injury.

Recent thigh and hamstringinjuries to Luka Modric and Marcelo have not helped Madrid's cause, as they try to figure out how to set up against Celta from the start and what kind of plan B to formulate should things not go to plan.

Madrid still have match-winners in the form of talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos and with the experienced Sergio Ramos at the back, still have a good chance of making it through to the competition's semi-final stage.

But Celta Vigo will be hoping to capitalise on the injury crisis and knock the giants out of the cup. It would be ahuge blow for Real who up until recently had looked an unstoppable force, embarking on a 40-match unbeaten run under Zidane going back to last season, before sufferingback-to-back defeats.
