Is That Neuer in Disguise!? The Premier League 'Sweeper Keeper' With Most Clearances This Season

Published on: 24 October 2016

The role of the 'Sweeper Keeper', is it about passing the ball as part of the team, as Manchester City and Claudio Bravo have encountered plenty of difficulty with this season, or is it more about being on the pulse andready to charge out to mop up at the first sign of danger, and just generally knowing when to 'get rid'?

A goalkeeper who can sense danger early and has the ability to burst forward to clear the ball is like having an extra defender on the field at any given time.

As far as the Premier League's 'Sweeper Keepers' are concerned, it is Leicester number one Kasper Schmeichel who is leading the way with 13 such clearances to his name.

The Danish international, just like his father Peter, is always keyed in to what is going on in front of him and is always lightning quick to spring andboot the ball to safety up-field.

Schmeichel narrowly leads Swansea number one Lukasz Fabianski, who has 12 sweeper clearances to his name in nine games. Arsenal'sPetr Cech, Watford'sHeurelho Gomes and West Ham's Adrian all have 11 each so far this season.

Perhaps Bravo, ought to do more of the clearing and less of the passing. His mistakes with the ball at his feethave cost Manchester City several times alreadyin his short time at the club. The Chilean has made eight sweeperclearances in the Premier League, the same as ex-City stopper Shay Given and one fewer than Sunderland youngster Jordan Pickford.
