Jamie Carragher Identifies Liverpool Player Who Could Stop Them Winning the Premier League

Published on: 05 December 2016

Jamie Carragher is one of the best defenders that Liverpool have ever had, with some even calling him one of the best defenders in Premier League history.

For that reason, it is probably wise that Jurgen Klopp lends him his ears when it comes to Carragher's opinions about the Reds' defensive frailties, which were exploited by Bournemouth too the fullest extentin their heroic 4-3 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

Gary Neville: "The main challenge for Liverpool is the defence, which it always has been, but it is also now the goalkeeper as well."

It is often said that defences win you Premier League titles, and many had been repeating the question of whether Liverpool have it. Even with Joel Matip injured, conceding four goals against Bournemouth points you towards a no for that question.

Carragher has singled out an individual for the Reds' fears at the back: third choice centre-back Lucas Leiva.

"People keep talking about Liverpool's defensive problems. The back four, maybe Lucas as your third-choice centre-back, it is probably not enough if you want to go and win the title."Carragher warned onMonday Night Football.

"Panic seems to set in. Liverpool seem to go through this a lot. The goalkeeper there has got to do an awful lot more (for the fourth goal) but it comes from players not making the right decision."

Joel Matip back in training for Liverpool at camp in Barcelona following ankle injury. Expected to be fit for weekend.

Many at Liverpool have grave concerns about first-choice goalkeeper Loris Karius, who simply does not look like a title-winning player.

"There were two games where he got asked questions. One was Swansea, and he struggled, and he was lucky that day.

"He didn't get the luck (against Bournemouth). That's why we were critical, because he got asked questions and he never answered them."

Karius only arrived at Liverpool in the summer, but needs to settle in quickly to silence his critics. The Reds' upcoming home tie against relegation strugglers West Ham at Anfield would be the perfect game to give a more composed performance.

It's a good job Loris Karius is a handsome beast with salon quality hair, because he ain't much good in goal. #bouliv

"It's still early days for his Liverpool career, I'm not saying he's finished by any stretch of the imagination but over the next 12-18 months that has got to improve."
