Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has thrown his weight behind the selection of John Paintsil as an assistant coach for the senior national team.

In a move made by Ghana coach Otto Addo in March, Joseph Laumann, John Paintsil, and Fatau Dauda were appointed as assistant coaches after Chris Hughton and his backroom staff were sacked after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast where the team exited at the group phase.

While some Ghanaians expressed support for the decision, others raised concerns about Paintsil's preparedness for the role.

However, Gyan emphasized that Paintsil was deserving of the position, citing his significant contributions to the national team.

"John (Paintsil) made considerable sacrifices for the national team, a fact that seems to have been overlooked. Following his retirement, he pursued coaching opportunities in South Africa, gaining valuable experience," Gyan stated on Asempa FM as monitored by Footballghana.com.

"Considering his post-retirement dedication to coaching, I fully endorse his appointment as an assistant coach," Gyan continued, highlighting Paintsil's coaching trajectory.

Paintsil was a prominent figure in the Black Stars from 2001 to 2013, during which he shared the dressing room with Gyan for a decade, from 2003 to 2013.

Gyan served as the captain of the Ghanaian team from 2013 until 2019.
