Jurgen Klopp Hails Liverpool's 'Ugly' Win Against Burnley & States 'It's a Massive Result'

Published on: 12 March 2017

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken about his delight at his side's comeback win against a dogged Burnley side at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool initially fell behind to a goal from Ashley Barnes, before Georginio Wijnaldum took advantage of a slice of good fortune to equalise before the break, with fellow midfielder Emre Can scoring the eventual winner with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner of Tom Heaton's net from outside the box.

Despite the win, Klopp's side were far from their free-flowing, free-scoring best, something that the German acknowledged post-match: "The performance was good enough to win the game and the result is massive for us. It's the first ugly game we've won. Usually when we are not that good, immediately we lose, said Klopp.

"In the end actually I liked it because its this type of game that we didn't win until now. It was not the most memorable game ever in the history of Liverpool but a very nice three points.

"The performance was good enough to win the game, but the result is massive for us."

"I said before the game that Burnley are the most consistent team in style “ they play what they play.

"They fight for the second balls, long balls, but Simon Mignolet came out for us which was so important", he added, saluting the Belgian stopper's confident performance against a robust Burnley side.

"I am happy about three points, that's the most important thing," Klopp concluded.

The win sees the Reds move five points clear of fellow Champions League chasers Arsenal, although the Gunners do have two matches in hand over Liverpool. Klopp's men now turn their attention to next Saturday's match at the Etihad, where they face Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, and will hope to continue their sparkling form against the rest of the Premier League's top six sides.
