Lucas Silva Returns to Real Madrid Training Following Heart Scare Over the Summer

Published on: 19 September 2016

Real Madrid midfielder Lucas Silva is to resume training at the club's Valdebebas facilities on Tuesday following the discovery of a heart condition over the summer that threatened to end his career.

An irregular heart beat was discovered in July as Silva was undergoing a medical to join Sporting CP on loan for the duration of the 2016/17 season.

The move fell through and, after denying suggestions it would force him to retire, the player took a shortbreak from football to undergo furthertests.

But now he's back and ready to return, tweeting, "After a month of intense work, very happy to start training. Very excited."

Silva, signed from Cruzeiro in his native Brazil in January 2015, has only played sparingly for Real, even before his medical issues became known.

The 23-year-old has made just nine appearances for Los Blancos and spent last season struggling to impose himself at Marseille. A further lack of opportunities in Madrid this season was the reason behind a loan to Portugal being arranged.

As such, it seems unlikely that he will return to playing any time soon. However, the re-imposing of Real's FIFA transfer embargo could mean that he has a role to fill yet.

Following a rejected appeal against the initial ban for illegally signing youth team players, the club is now banned from registering new players for two transfer windows until January 2018.

That lack of incoming players could see Silva get another chance, with Real needing to be carefully consider every individual they allow to leave with no way to find a replacement other than promoting junior players to the first-team.
