Mancini: Home or away Italy must have the same mentality

Published on: 14 October 2018

Roberto Mancini is confident of European Championship qualification and is understandably pleased with his Italy side’s performance and, above all, their mentality in a 1-0 win away to Poland on Sunday.

The Azzurri were dominant throughout and it looked as though their wastefulness was going to cost them until Cristiano Biraghi popped up with a last-gasp winner.

“We have to get to the European Championship,” Mancini said at his post-match press conference when asked if Italy could beat Portugal to win their Nations League group.

“The result is important and we have to have this mentality whether we play at home or away.”

Mancini did say that it was not a quick fix for Italy’s problems and they still have work to do, but that the technical abilities of his players could see them get out of this slump sooner than originally expected.

“I had to say again that we need the right mentality,” he added.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t take just three or four matches.

“I have to say though that the guys are very good technically and they could shorten the process.”
