The President of the May 9 Foundation, Herbert Mensah, has urged for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies similar to the 2001 incident that resulted in the loss of over 120 football fans' lives.
The fatal event transpired during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium, where enraged supporters hurled bottles and objects onto the pitch in response to a contentious referee decision.
In the aftermath, law enforcement deployed tear gas, and the stadium gates were shut, culminating in a calamitous stampede.
To mark the 23rd anniversary, the former Asante Kotoko CEO released a statement to commemorate the tragedy.
"May 9 has become symbolic of so many things. The critical situation is that we should at least set a benchmark for this sort of thing to never happen again."
"There are other issues happening in terms of violence at sporting events which must stop. We have not forgotten, we are there to support."
