Newcastle fans call for Christian Atsu to be signed permanently after his performance against Barnsley

Newcastle United sealed the Championship title as their 3-0 victory against Barnsley – coupled with Brighton and Hove Albion’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa – saw Rafa Benitez’s side leapfrog the Seagulls and triumph at the death.

It was a dramatic end to a topsy-turvy campaign and the Magpies can now look ahead to their imminent return to the Premier League after just one season away.

Among the Newcastle players on show this weekend was loanee Christian Atsu, who has spent the season at st James’ Park from his parent club Chelsea.

With little chance of a breakthrough at Stamford Bridge, the Ghana international is likely to be available this summer for the right price, and some Newcastle fans have been quick to call for a permanent deal after his latest showing.

Atsu may have only scored five goals and provided three assists this season but his work rate has not gone unnoticed, and with the player featuring for the final time this season it will be interesting to see what Benitez has in mind for the 25-year-old.
