Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey breaks finger

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has broken a finger in training.

The Sun says he faces having to wear a cast at Southampton on Sunday week.

He was found to have fractured a finger and had a plaster cast put on last night.

The injury should not force Shelvey out of action as footballers are allowed to play in casts as long as they are lightweight.

That will be a relief for Magpies boss Rafa Benitez after Shelvey impressed in last Sunday's draw against Liverpool, his first start since the opening-weekend defeat to Tottenham.
