Nigeria avoid Senegal, Ghana, Egypt as 2023 AFCON qualification draw revealed

Nigeria avoided heavyweight countries including Senegal, Ghana and Egypt following the draw of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification.

The Super Eagles have been placed in Group A together with Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome e Principe or Mauritius.

Ahead of the draw in Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday, the West African football powerhouse were seeded in Pot 1 along with the 12 highest ranked African countries from the latest FIFA rankings released on March 31, hence it's unlikely they will come up against African heavyweight countries.

Nigeria were knocked out of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon by Tunisia in the last 16, having won all their group games including beating finalists Egypt.

After the tournament, Augustine Eguavoen stepped down from the Super Eagles interim coaching job immediately.

A total of 48 countries, including hosts Côte d'Ivoire , are eligible to feature in the final stage of the qualifiers scheduled to begin in June across the continent.
