Otto Addo needs time to rebuild Black Stars - Asamoah Gyan

Published on: 03 April 2024

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to exercise patience with Otto Addo in his return to the helm as head coach.

Addo's reappointment was confirmed prior to the March international break, where he led the team in matches against Nigeria and Uganda. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat against Nigeria and settled for a 2-2 draw against Uganda.

Returning to the national team at a challenging juncture, Addo inherits a team that has struggled since their last victory under Chris Hughton in September 2023. With no wins in his first two games, Ghana now faces a seven-game winless streak across all competitions.

However, Gyan, who shared the field with Otto Addo during the 2006 World Cup, remains optimistic about his former teammate's capabilities given time to shape the team.

"Otto Addo has returned to a different atmosphere and with different players. Although he has worked with some of the players before, it's still a process," remarked Asamoah Gyan on Asempa FM. "He has also brought in a new staff, signaling a new era."

"Let's see what he has in store for us. We will support him throughout the rebuilding process and evaluate where he can lead us."

"Ghanaians will ultimately judge his performance, so I believe we should allow him time to rebuild his team."

Otto Addo previously led the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they won one of their three group-stage matches. Despite defeats to Portugal and Uruguay, their progress from the group stage was thwarted.

He will hope to steer the team to record wins in June later this year when they take on Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
