Pellegrini eyes European boost

Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has urged his side to use their Champions League last-16 tie with FC Porto as a springboard to better things in the coming months.

The Giallorossi got back to winning way on Friday evening with a 3-0 Serie A win at lowly Chievo, having previously failed to claim victory in any of their previous three outings in all competitions.

It will be a very difficult game, but we want to advance.

That run included a humiliating 7-1 Coppa Italia defeat at Fiorentina and Pellegrini believes that progressing in Europe could help his side get back on track to try and secure a top-four finish in the league.

He told Tele Radio Stereo: "Porto aren't a top, top European team, but they're still a great side.

"They are physical, they play good football, run a lot and know what they want. It will be a very difficult game, but we want to advance.

"After last year we know what it means to go through, plus it can change our season, despite the difficulties we've faced so far."

Somewhat surprisingly, these two sides have only ever met once before in European competition, that coming in the play-off round of the Champions League two seasons ago.

Then Porto claimed a 4-1 aggregate success, with the second leg in the Stadio Olimpico finishing 3-0 to the visitors after the first leg in Portugal ended in a 1-1 draw.

A 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening is priced at 11/2, with Roma - who reached the semi-finals last season - 10/11 to qualify for the quarter-finals, while Porto can be backed at 10/11.
