Philippe Coutinho Reveals Which Rival Premier League Boss Helped Him Earlier in His Career

Published on: 23 November 2016

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho is shining under the tutelage of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, but there is another current Premier League manager he worked with early in his career who is arguably more responsible for getting the ball rolling for the talented Brazilian.

A teenage Coutinho encountered Mauricio Pochettino during a loan spell away from former club Inter when the Spurs coach was in charge at Espanyol in La Liga.

"My confidence has been really building since my time at Espanyol," the Anfield favourite revealed to Sky Sports.

Coutinho scored five times in 16 La Liga appearances for the Barcelona-based club (will that existing familiarity with the city ever tempt to him join Barcelona at Camp Nou?) during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign. He then returned to Inter at the end of the season and had joined Liverpool for £8.5m within a few months.

Looking back on that spell under Pochettino, Coutinho now draws similarities between the Agentine and Klopp in terms of the style of play they each promote.

"The two coaches are actually very similar on the pressing side of the game. They spend a lot of time on that side of it and it's a lot of hard work," the player explained.

The confidence that Coutinho took from Pochettino is being built on by Klopp and the 24-year-old has made a fine start to the season as Liverpool look to claim a first league title since 1990 - before Coutinho was even born.

"It's all about the confidence and the mentality that [Klopp]has given us," he said.

"[Liverpool] used to be a team that didn't really believe in itself. Now the players feel more comfortable and this comes from the coach. That's something that's reflected on the pitch and in the results."
