Erik Lamela could find himself in a heap of trouble after being pictured gouging the eye of Dejan Lovren in Tottenham's clash with Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Saturday lunchtime.

Reports have suggested that the incident occurred after the Reds' Croatian defender tussled with Spurs striker Harry Kane.

Lovren collected the ball after committing a foul on the Spurs man, before both Kane and Lamela attempted to retrieve the ball from the defender.

However, the Argentine midfielder appeared to overstep the mark, clawing at the face of the Liverpool man in an incident that went unnoticed by referee Bobby Madley.

A number of Liverpool fans made public their views on Twitter following the game, in an attempt to raise the profile of Lamela's gouge and see him retrospectively banned.

With the Alli knee on Firmino, the clear eye gauge on Lovren from Lamela and the awful ref display all game. Surely the @FA are looking?

Just seen the Lamela/Lovren incident. Surely a ban coming for the Spurs player? Couldn't be more cut and dry, even for the FA.

It is not the first time that a Tottenham player has been accused of eye gouging. Lamela's teammate Moussa Dembele was charged for the action on Chelsea's Diego Costa in a tie that was labelled 'The Battle of the Bridge' at the back of the previous campaign.

Dembele is yet to feature this season as he was handed a six match ban for the altercation, whilst the club were fined £225,000.

Lamela was also heavily involved in the unsightly scenes at Stamford Bridge back in May, appearing to stamp on Cesc Fabregas' hand as Spurs' title charge grounded to a halt.

The Spurs midfielder does have a reputation for having a petulant streak running throughout his performances. In February last season he led the way in terms of fouls made, having committed 47.
