Ryan keen on repeat performance

Published on: 17 October 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan is hoping to see his side build on a first Premier League clean sheet of the season when they take on Newcastle United.

The Seagulls secured a 1-0 home win over West Ham just before the international break, blanking the opposition team for the first time in eight league outings so far this season.

If you don't concede, you're halfway towards winning the game.

And Australia international Ryan is keen to mastermind a repeat performance against the Magpies at St James' Park on Saturday.

He told his club's official website: "It had been a long time coming. We had some tough fixtures and it was good to finally get that clean sheet, but the progress was there leading up to it.

"You saw that from our defensively-disciplined display against Manchester City. They hit us on two counter-attacks where we weren't able to get the defensive block set and in place.

"A team like Manchester City is able to punish you, but we rolled that on to the following week against West Ham, where we were able to stay strong and they weren't able to break us down.

"If you don't concede, you're halfway towards winning the game. The worst possible scenario is a draw."

Albion kept two clean sheets against Newcastle last season, with the meeting of the two sides on Tyneside ending in a goalless draw.

Brighton can be backed at 5/2 to take all three points on Saturday and are 12/5 to keep a clean sheet, with the hosts 6/1 to edge a 1-0 victory.
