New England Revolution Sporting Director Curt Onalfo says signing Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah will afford them the opportunity to field strong teams in all competitions.

The 33-year-old defender sealed a one-year contract with the option to extend for an additional year.

Curt Onalfo was full of praise for Mensah’s experience and the depth he adds to their centre-back position.

“Jonathan Mensah is an experienced defender with a long history of success in our league and at the international level, and someone who knows firsthand what it takes to win an MLS Cup,” Curt Onalfo said after the announcement of Mensah.

“Adding Jonathan to our already talented group of central defenders gives us the depth required to field a strong team in every competition as we navigate a busy schedule.”

Mensah brings seven seasons of MLS experience to New England, including an impactful six-year stint with the Columbus Crew from 2017 to 2022.

Guided by New England’s new head coach, Caleb Porter, Mensah played a pivotal role in Columbus winning the 2020 MLS Cup title, featuring in every minute of the regular season and playoffs and earning recognition in the MLS Best XI.

Ahead of the 2023 season, he joined the San Jose Earthquakes, making 26 appearances, including 21 starts, and played a key role in San Jose’s journey to the postseason.
