Silva poised for midfield boost

Published on: 17 October 2018

Everton boss Marco Silva is relishing the prospect of having two further midfield options at his disposal in the very near future.

Loan signing Andre Gomes has yet to feature for the Blues, having joined from Barcelona whilst being troubled by a hamstring injury.

However, he is closing in on full fitness and is joined by Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy, who has been sidelined since January due to a broken leg.

And Silva is looking forward to having options to choose from in the centre of the park, with Portugal international Gomes and McCarthy bringing different strengths to the table.

Silva told the Daily Echo: "He (Gomes) is strong in his mind and I am sure he will help our squad like we need. We are happy with our midfielders, of course, but he can give different things for us.

"He is working with confidence and training with confidence. I know his qualities very well and he can give us very good things.

"We need to have patience with him, because we needed to get him into a good physical condition. He is working to achieve that and now it is games he needs."

Meanwhile, Silva added about McCarthy: "Some of the others are not as strong in some challenges and James can give us that in some situations, but his quality is important as well."

The Toffees are back in action on Sunday, following the international break, when they welcome Crystal Palace to Goodison Park.

Everton are 4/5 to defeat the Eagles and are 8/1 to do so by a 2-0 scoreline, with the hosts 6/4 to keep a clean sheet.
