Southgate explains Wilson inclusion

Gareth Southgate says England's forthcoming games are a good opportunity to see how Callum Wilson adapts to international football.

The Bournemouth striker has been included in the England squad for the friendly game against the USA and the Nations League encounter with Croatia.

He's been involved with either scoring or assists, with a high number of goals this season.

Southgate also gave recalls to Michael Keane, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Lewis Dunk for the games which both take place at Wembley.

Wilson meanwhile has been rewarded for his form throughout Bournemouth's impressive spell in the Premier League, especially this campaign.

The Cherries are sixth in the table and Wilson has scored six goals so far this season. Southgate says he knows the striker well, from his time with the England Under 21s and is looking forward to working with him again.

He told a press conference to announce the squad: "He's a threat in terms of running in behind defences.

"He's been involved with either scoring or assists, with a high number of goals this season, so it's a good opportunity for us to have a look at him and see how he fits into what we do, and for him to get a feel of working with the senior team."

The squad also included the name of Wayne Rooney after it was announced that the player would come out of international retirement for one game, to make a farewell appearance against the United States where he is now based.

Southgate said that there has been ongoing discussions on paying tribute to Rooney's England career and the friendly with the USA was seen as appropriate.

"We have brought former players back to speak and present shirts. I think all the players respect Wayne's contribution and that he deserves the best possible send-off," he added.

England play the USA on Thursday and then host Croatia the following Sunday.

England are 1/4 to win against the United States who are 11/1 and the draw 9/2.

England are 10/1 to win the Nations League with Croatia 66/1 and Spain 3/1.
